Original Memorial Plan Speech by
ORHS Student Council President

Hello.  My name is Matt Mullane, Student Council President of Oak Ridge High School in Tennessee.  On September 11th a wave of shock swept across our nation as America was attacked by terrorists.  I have an idea that will demonstrate my generation’s willingness to combat terrorism both now and in the future.  We must show now that we care about the lives lost in New York, in Washington DC, on the four airplanes that were used as missiles, and any innocent life, American or not, that has been lost because of terrorism.  I call now on my generation to consider this idea.

The steel from the World Trade Center buildings can be used to symbolize our nation’s strength by creating a national memorial.  This memorial will be like none other that the United States has ever made.  The steel can be brought to life again, by spreading pieces across our nation, in every city of every state, to symbolize that we were all affected and to ensure that we never forget.

Oak Ridge High School wants to create not a memorial that America has to go and visit, but rather a memorial that will go to every cooperating high school.  The steel from the World Trade Center should be retrieved, cut up, and adorned with bronze plaques to be sent out across our nation.  Designs for the memorial and a proposed inscription for the plaque may also be viewed on our web site, at www.wtcsteel.org.

Here is something great that all Americans can do together.  We will need your efforts and contributions to succeed.  Tell your school and government leaders about our web site.  Send us your ideas and opinions through our site to help us build a support network.  If you hold a political office, use it to forward this idea. America has always been a country of action, strong, resolute--and this is a challenge to show that we will continue in strength and honor to pursue a world of peace.  Thank you.
